DescriptionBirds were often used in Celtic patterns as it was believed that they were messengers flying between the heavenly and earthly realms and St. Columba was believed to have spoken the language of birds. Here two birds are entwined with knotwork, a symbol of Eternity and the mystery of life. The design was originally inspired by a medieval carving, now displayed in the Abbey cloisters.
